It can be argued that the Barbie aesthetic is the most overdone archetype in modern western society, which is one of the reasons Hotpunkgirl.com came about in the first place. Nothing against the Barbies of the world, of course, but some of us prefer styles that run directly counter to the mainstream’s scrubbed, polished, and passive vision of bland perfection. When we here at Hotpunkgirl.com World Headquarters think of body modification, we’re dreaming of tattoos and piercings, not boob jobs. And if we’re just talking about dolls, Ugly Shyla, doll artiste extraordinaire, proves that there’s much more out there than the quaint Barbies and Kens to take home to your little ones. If you’re in an Addams Family kind of way, maybe you’d like to coddle your toddler with a gift that keeps on giving (nightmares): one of Ugly Shyla’s warped, morbid art doll creations!
“No, I do not make dolls that look like Living Dead Dolls,” she clarifies (in case you were wondering. Apparently, many people do). If that’s the sort of thing you’re looking for, you’d best saunter elsewhere, punk.
Ugly Shyla continues, “I’m also an apocalyptic pinup model, actress, three-legged cat owner, shock performance artist, and singer. And I’m not one of those girls who just fancies herself a model or actress. I have had my picture taken, sometimes even by well-known photographers, and I have actually been in a movie and been paid for it.”
