Molly Crabapple
Thursday, March 24th, 2005The highly caffeinated Molly Crabapple isn’t always sketching be-wigged enlightenment-era aristrocrats, vengeful goddesses, and impish bookworms. Forsooth, when she’s not making art, Molly Crabapple is the art. Ah, but here. It is better to let her tell you the story, no?
“I learned to draw in a Parisian bookstore. I now credit my artistic success to a combination of harsh criticism from the proprietor and hours copying “A Tart’s Progress.” Later, I sketched by way through Morocco and Kurdistan — and once into a Turkish jail.
“Back in New York, I’ve made my lucre as a pinup model and burlesque dancer, while turning out Victorian-themed illustrations for SCREW and NY Press. As a fine artist, I’ve hung in staid, white walled establishments, and next to John John Jesse in the notorious CBGB’s 313. Goals? To be a combination of Reginald Marsh and Charles Dana Gibson, with a wee bit of Dita Von Teese on the side.
“If given drink I will be mean. Just like when I’m sober.”
Her sites are sights for eyes sore and wide, and I have no idea why you’re wasting your time here when you could be there! Or there! She contributes to The Asylum, and, heck, she’s even found the time to moonlight as a SuicideGirl!
There. And when you’re done with all that, why don’t you stop with the take, take, take and buy her some books? Her birthday’s not ’til September, but what did you get her last year, punk?
This site was designed for those of us who have an aesthetic appreciation of women who don’t conform to mainstream society’s ideal of beauty. A “Hotpunkgirl” is someone who flips up her middle finger at such standards and dares her own style in spite of what the popular fashion magazines tell her is “in.” If you’re hung up on compartmentalizing and your strict definition of “punk” doesn’t seem to match ours, you might want to check out The Captain’s Helm for a little explanation. Please enjoy!
